(A) Main building of the main office of Bank of Japan (Important Cultural Property, 2-1 Hongoku-cho 2 chome Nihonbashi, Chuoku, Tokyo)

The main building of the BANK of Japan is one of the finest examples of Meiji Period western-style architecture. It was designed by Dr. Kingo Tatsuno of Tokyo Imperial University and was constructed over the period from 1890~1896.

This building, which adopts neo-Baroque style with Renaissance detail predominantly, has dignity suitable for the atmosphere of the Meiji era which was a Renaissance in Japan.

This building has withstood 80 years and the beauty of its sculptured walls and blue-green dome makes it stand distinct amongst the surrounding recent modern architecture.

(B) OLD HUNTER HOUSE (Important Cultural Property, Oji Park, Nada-ku, Kobeshi, Hyogo Prefecture)

It is said that this building was built in 1889 by an English craftsman commissioned by A. Gleppe, a German. The house was later purchased by E.H. Hunter, an Englishman and was removed to its present site in 1963 after various renovations.

The is the largest colonial house in Japan. The foundation is of stone and the walls of combed mortar. A colonnade verandah encloses the southern and eastern sides. The projecting parts of this verandah are capped by triangular pediments featuring ridge ornaments and arabesque design.

  • Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, the first Nepalese woman to scale Mt. Everest, was born on 10th of December 1960 in Surke of Solukhumbu District Nepal.
  • Mrs. Sherpa, an ambitious climber succeeded to step at the peak of Mt. Everest and changed all of her dreams into reality on the 22nd April 1993 at 2.15 P.M. and thus brightened the self respect and glory of Nepalese women. Very soon, this joy of victory turned into sorrow. The tragedy of her sad demise occurred due to missing overnight in bivouac on the southern ridge while descending.

About : 

  • Falgunanda was born in 1885 in Ilam district, Nepal. He is renowned as Mahaguru (the great teacher) especially among the Limbus. He is remembered for his outstanding socio-cultural and religious messages in the Limbu ethnicity, while not less exemplary are these to others as well. His one message is practice no animal sacrifice, since this sacrifice (taboo) raises social expenditures on celebrations; like birth, wedding and funeral. His further messages are similarly : eliminate social orthodoxies, run school for children, give literacy and awareness to children through their mother tongue. Education he stressed on chiefly because he believed it brings in knowledge to wash one’s heart clean which alone is key to emancipation which again is the Ultimate Truth to realize God. In his philosophy there can be no better friend than love and nonviolence.
  • Falgunanda who also built innumerable shrines died in 1949.

  • The eminent poet of Nepali literature Siddhi Charan Shrestha was born in the district of Okhaklhunga on May 22nd, 1912. He dedicated his entire life to epic writing and is well known as the poet of Age (Yuga Kavi) in the realm of Nepalese literature.
  • Siddhi Charan, an exponent of spontaneous expressionism in the epic stream of Nepali literature, a poet heralding rebellion from his poetry, a propounder of inner glimpse of woman and an expounder of natural geography for the first time in poetry, is regarded as a champion on both Nepali and Newari poetry. Free expressionism, reflectionism, symbolism, shadowism, idealism, mysticism, progressionism, realism and etc. find full expression in his works. About 3 dozens of his works in Nepali and Newari have been published.
  • Siddhi Charan Shrestha, the lifelong member of Royal Nepal Academy was awarded with Tribhuvan Puraskar in 1970 and Prithvi Pragyan Puraskar in 1988. He was also decorated with Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu and Bikhyat Trishakti Patta by His Majesty the King.

  • Sungdare Sherpa was born in 1956 in Pangboche village of Solukhumbu district, Nepal. He was the first Nepali to climb Mt. Everest several times.
  • Obsessed with the zeal of mountaineering, Sungdare Sherpa took up expedition as a profession since his early life. He scaled Everest for the first time in 1979. Since then his victory over Everest were reported in succession in 1981, 1982, 1985, and 1988. His last success was with NepalChinaJapan friendship expedition team.
  • He was decorated by HM the King the Suprasiddha Prawal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu and Jyotirmaya Suvikhyat Trishakti Patta.
  • Sungdare Sherpa died of an accidental fall in Imja river of his own village on 17th of October 1989.

  • Born on Dec. 2, 1912 in Parasi of Nawal Parasi district of NepalTanka Prasad Acharya has made historic contribution in the Nepalese political context. Acharya came into active politics since his early youth being obsessed by popular freedom and democracy struggle against the ruling Ranas.
  • Termed as forerunner political organizer Acharya‘s Nepal Praja Parishad party holds a marathon record in democracy and multiparty break through. On this campaign four among his colleagues got executed by the despotic Ranas while he was commuted to life imprisonment for his caste status they revered for. The overthrow of Ranas in 1950 freed him, and in 1956 he was sworn in as the interim Prime Minister. During his 18 months Government tenure bureaucracy in Nepal got a legal status, the Planning Commission and the Nepal Rastra Bank were established and diplomatic friendship also got extended. Further in his period Nepal participated in the UN General Assembly which placed her on the forefront of global scene beyond the narrow confines of the past.
  • Acharya dedicated his entire life to the cause of nationalism and integrity combined with democratic values and norms.
  • He died on April 24, 1992.

He is said to have been killed by some bigoted fanatics violently against the religious faith he zealously endeavoured to propagate.

    • Thakurdwara Temple is situated amidst the dense forest lying in Thakurdwara Village Development Committee, Bardiya District. An image of Thakur (Lord Vishnu) is specially installed inside this temple regarded as the most famous from the religious standpoint. On the Makar Sankranti a great festival is observed. Several devotees from Nepal and neighbouring country, India congregate here and offer their worship to the Lord Thakur.
