About :

  • Maharaja Madhav Rao Scindia (1st) of erstwhile State of Gwalior, conceived the idea of setting up an engineering college at Gwalior to the major benefit of the youths of the region during the visit to Europe in 1925. But the Institute could not be established due to his death in the same year.
  • The prestigious institute of the State of Madhya Pradesh, Maharaja Madhav Institute of Technology and Science (then known as Madhav Engineering College) was established 32 years later in 1957 by Jiwajirao Scindia, with the prime objective of providing Technical Education at undergraduate and post graduate level along with conducting research activities to produce trained technical man power for the progress of the state and the nation.
  • Initially the Institute, Madhav Engineering College, started functioning in the Residency Palace which is now being used by Indian Air Force as Residency Officers’ Mess. The institute had no building of its own at the initial stage.
  • The foundation stone of the Institute’s building was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India on 20th October, 1956 and the building was inaugurated on 11th December 1964 by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India.
  • The Institute started initially with B.E. Courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with total intake of 120 and ceaselessly kept striving to add Postgraduate and Ph.D. Courses in Applied Sciences in 1967. Thereafter, the Institute kept adding feathers in its cap by introducing various other engineering courses such as B.E. Electronics Engineering in 1981, undergraduate course in Architecture in 1984. The Institute took the lead in the region to start Postgraduate course in Computer Applications (M.C.A.) in 1996 under the leadership of Madhavrao Scindia to face the emerging challenges of computer revolution in India.
  • The institute started offering the Postgraduate Course in Civil Engineering with specialization in Construction Technology and Management in 1987, which was perhaps the first institution to do so in India. This was followed by introduction of Post-Graduation course in Electronics and Electrical Engineering Departments in 1995.
  • With an aim to cater to the huge needs of the state and the nation the Institute introduced B.E. in Computer Science and Chemical Engineering in 1994 and 1995 respectively and the discipline of Information Technology & Bio-technology in 2000 Postgraduate course in Production Technology in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Microwave Engineering in Electronics Department, Bio-tech in Biotechnology Department and Urban Management in Architecture Planning Department are the latest additions to the Institute. The Institute also conducts Ph.D. programme in various disciplines of Engineering and Science such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, CSE & IT, MCA etc. The Institute also has a credit of enrolling a total number of 30 students for the research programme out of which 4 students have submitted their papers.
  • During its glorious 50 years of service to the country it introduced the following Under graduate and Postgraduate courses :
    • Under graduate Courses (B.E.) : Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Bio-Technology, Mechanical Engineering.
    • Postgraduate Courses (M.E.) : Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering), (Construction Technology and Management), (Public Health Engineering), Electronics Engineering (Microwave), (CCN), Electrical Engineering (Industrial System Drive), (Measurement and Control), Mechanical Engineering (Material Handling), (Production), Architectural Engineering (Urban Development), Bio-Tech Engineering, Master in Computer Applications.
  • The Institute is growing steadily and has student strength of 2500 in the campus under different graduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • The human resources generated by the Institute are well accepted at national and international level such as NASA, Microsoft reputed universities of USA and E.U.
  • The graduates of MITS, Gwalior scaled heights in government organizations such as Union Public Service Commission, Armed Forces, Indian Space Research Organization, Aeronautical Development Establishment, SIDBI, Airport Authority of India Ltd., Indian Railways, BSNL, SAIL, etc.
  • Even the corporate world has a significant presence of alumni of the Institute.
