About :Â
- Since 2014, Hon’ble PM. Shri Narendra Modi addresses the nation every month through his flagship radio programme, ‘Mann Ki Baat’. The first episode of Mann Ki Baat was aired on 3rd October 2014, and it gradually became a nationwide ritual which inspires millions of people to play an active part in the developmental journey of India.
- The programme, the first experiment of its kind, will be marking its continued success with its 100th episode in April 2023 and will be unfurling unlimited possibilities in the times to come, while creating a dialogue and a creative stir in governance.
- Through the vast network of ‘All India Radio’ the Prime Minister of India reaches a vast spectrum of the socio-economically and culturally diverse populace, and inspires and energizes them on not just social, cultural, and economic issues but challenging problems that the world is facing today such as climate change, waste management, etc. All India Radio is the largest radio network and broadcasting organization in the world, with a network of 262 radio stations. It is accessible in 23 languages and 146 dialects catering to the remotest of regions in the nation. A craftily curated booklet, with key highlights of the Prime Minister’s address, is also published each month since February 2022, which reaches over 6 crore people virtually.
- The programme has been conceived and implemented around the idea of citizen engagement and participation. Right from the name of the programme to the choice of topics for each episode and calls to action, Janbhagidari is ensured. The primary objective of Mann Ki Baat is to build a direct connect between the Prime Minister of India and its citizens. Since its inception, Mann Ki Baat has emerged as an effective tool of Jan Andolan catalyzing social movements involving communities across the lengths and breadth of the nation.
- With Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister has successfully established a mechanism to take schemes and policies to the people at every level and generate awareness about the same. In addition to this, he strives to highlight the success stories of various schemes, and governance practices from the grass-root levels to motivate more people to become a beneficiary. Even during times of crisis, the programme has played an important role in informing people about the developmental measures taken by the government. For instance, during COVID-19, the Prime Minister took to Mann Ki Baat to spread awareness about the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana aimed at providing free foodgrains to over 80 crore people whose livelihoods were affected by COVID. This way Mann Ki Baat has become an important platform for generating awareness on Good Governance.
- Furthering the vision of building self-reliant, New India, the Mann Ki Baat programme is focused on highlighting the national and global successes of the nation, urging people to participate in the nation’s development, while instilling a sense of pride, belonging and nationalism in the citizens. In the 32nd episode, the Prime Minister congratulated the people and public servants of Reasi Block in Jammu and Kashmir for becoming an Open-Defecation free state under the Swachh Bharat Campaign. Such examples showcase how Mann Ki Baat is not just a radio programme, but a reflection of India’s holistic development.
- Apart from highlighting various aspects of governance, Prime Minister also educates the masses on various topics of importance through Mann Ki Baat. Topics like health, sports, innovation, environment, clean energy etc. are few to mention. For example, in the 95th episode of Mann Ki Baat aired on 27th November 2022, Prime Minister talked about Muscular Dystrophy, an inherited disorder that causes progressive loss of muscle mass, and highlighted the institute that has been working to spread awareness around the disease. Quite often, he also talks about global issues and increases the awareness as well as curiosity among the listeners on the topic.
- One of the most important facets of Mann Ki Baat is that it is a programme that is designed to reach out to listeners even in the remotest of regions and inspire action. Very often, the Prime Minister highlights the inspiring success stories of common citizens of India who have brought about a wave of change in their region by taking actionable measures towards the collective success of the nation. These stories serve as excellent examples to motivate people and inspire so many others to take small steps towards building a better India for today and tomorrow.
- Over successive episodes, the social messages delivered by the Prime Minister in the program have started to become a social media trend in a matter of few hours as well as a mass movement (janandolan) in a matter of few weeks. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, COVID Vaccination and Har Ghar Tiranga are just a few examples of this.
- The programme is also centered around connecting people with their roots through highlighting traditional Indian culture, art, and heritage. Yoga and Ayurveda have found mention in the programme quite often, thus, fostering their growing popularity. The show has also, time and again, highlighted the rich architecture, art and culture and traditions of India. For example, in the 87th episode, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of step wells as he talked about Bansilal Pet Kuan of Secunderabad, further urging people to conserve and revive these heritage sites.
- Mann Ki Baat is a unique programme, bringing the government closer to the citizens by establishing an effective two-way channel of communication. Every month, the Prime Minister receives a plethora of letters from across the nation, which he sheds light upon during the programme. It is also not an uncommon practice for the PM to have telephonic conversations with the people during the show. Such a mode of communication between the elected leader and the masses plays a significant role in the strengthening people’s belief in democracy and governance.
- Throughout its successful course of 99 episodes (99th episode telecast on 26th March 2023) spanning over 8 years, the programme has played a pivotal role in nation-building. The Prime Minister often uses this unique monthly address to spread knowledge and awareness about India’s rich cultural heritage and traditions, and various governance practices. Covering a wide range of themes which include social, economic, technological, financial, instrumental, historical and cultural.
- Mann Ki Baat is a unique initiative of the Prime Minister of India to take public communication to a whole new level. It is a first-of-its-kind radio show that runs on the ideas, aspirations, hopes, and contributions of the people of India and contribute towards building the New India. Standing tall on the principles of transparency, accountability, innovation, experimentation, and citizen participation, Mann Ki Baat is indeed a new paradigm of governance, continuously evolving to meet the complex challenges of the present time, and constantly working to create a brighter future for India.
